The University of Florida Literacy Institute (UFLI) will comprehensively review the UFLI Foundations' explicit and systematic phonics program. This will include a brief overview of the program, a review of essential background knowledge needed for implementation, and an overview of the manual and materials needed. Each lesson step will be covered in-depth with an opportunity to practice the newly learned strategies. Finally, there will be a brief overview to progress monitoring and differentiation.

This session will provide participants with the information required to implement the UFLI Foundations in their classrooms effectively.

Participants who complete this training are also eligible to participate in the Facilitator Training program and subsequently deliver this Implementation training program in their school or division.

Carrie Perry

Carrie Perry has a bachelor’s degree in Interdisciplinary Liberal Studies with a minor in Special Education from James Madison University. She is currently seeking a master’s degree in Special Education and a Dyslexia Certificate from the University of Florida. Carrie began her career as an exceptional student education teacher and transitioned to the ESE Coordinator until she pursued a position in the Exceptional Student Education Department supporting teachers in various reading programs in the School District of Palm Beach County. Carrie currently works for the University of Florida Literacy Institute and provides support and professional development to district and school administrators, literacy coaches, and teachers in various school districts internationally. As a Partnership Facilitator with UFLI, Carrie is excited to share her personal experiences teaching and supporting teachers implementing Foundations and her love for the program with others.

Dr. Rasheeda West

Dr. Rasheeda West has been a facilitator with UFLI for five years. Prior to that she was a reading coach in the 6th largest school district in the United States. She has taught grades 1-5 and misses her time as a classroom instructor. Dr. West relies on her decades of experience in education and research-based practices to inform her engagement with teachers and students. She is always excited to spend time with teachers and remains committed to learning.

Participants are required to acquire their own copy of the UFLI Foundations manual directly from the University of Florida. This is the only resource that must be purchased, access to all other support resources, videos, printables is provided at no additional cost.
