A Rich Beginning with Literacy

Education embraces a relationship between culture, art, language, learning and the image of the child. Over the years, discussions on education with Indigenous leaders have pointed to several key issues that contain a main theme: “language and culture are critically important for the successful development, education and wellbeing of First Nations students” (Government of Canada, 2018).

Connecting all children with a natural environment that embraces the “hundred languages of a child”, is engaging, experiential and rich.  Within this environment literacy opportunities are natural components.  Children read their surroundings, successfully progress through stages of  transcribing their thoughts orally, in print and with a multitude of mediums.  The teacher provides a space and materials that are conducive to developing and stretching the child’s innate desire to tell stories and communicate with others.
