Design thinking is a process and set of mindsets that allows us to identify problems, dream up big possibilities, and create and test a practical, hands-on solution. Design thinking is a helpful process teachers can use to create meaningful, connected learning tasks. It is an equally powerful method for students that connects their learning to the world around them.

Through this design sprint, we will experience the design process from start to finish over the course of 2 days. Beginning with an immersive session on the land with an Elder, we will make personal and professional connections to what it means to learn on the land and how teachers might use this experience to plan worthwhile experiences for their students. Perspective building will continue as we learn and notice through multiple lenses including: Indigenous perspectives and ways of knowing, social issues, scientific ways of knowing, and human needs.

Participants will receive access to an on-line community moderated by the presenters and consortia staff to continue the conversations and learning over the course of the year.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Deepen your understandings of Indigenous knowledge systems.
  • Experience the design thinking process.
  • Understand applications of design thinking and the mindsets in your professional context.
  • Connect Indigenous pedagogies and ways of knowing to the Alberta Programs of Study.

This learning opportunity is supported by a grant from Alberta Education.
