What is a refugee and what do we need to understand about refugees in order to welcome them into the learning environment. Language learners approach learning differently based on their backgrounds and experiences. Our refugee students come with a variety of experiences. It is important to get to know these students as individual language learners; what their strengths are, where they may need additional supports and what supports may better suit their needs. As we get to know our learners and value what they bring to the table it is important to ensure that language learners understand their own strengths, what supports and strategies they need and how they can take an active role in their own learning. In this session we will look at how to gather information to best support our refugee language learners, how to best support their literacy and numeracy development and how to empower them to advocate for their own learning needs.
